As we saw last week, Abram was a man, just like the rest of us, and had fears and doubts about God's plan for his life, despite the promises he received from God. Yet God displayed his compassion and understanding by reassuring Abram that He would bring his promises to fruition.
This week, we saw the same pattern once again as Abram asks for a sign of God's promise that he and his descendants would inherit the Promised Land. And, just as before, God responds in love by not only affirming his promise once again, but also by entering into a formal covenant with Abram and sealing the covenant with fire.
